People who want to perhaps save some money as well as put a personal touch on cards they give to friends and relatives can attend the Stamping with Cindy card making class at the Austintown library twice a month to learn how to make their own. The most recent class was Jan. 23, during which the attendees made calendars.
The classes started in September. One class each month is in the morning and the other is in the evening.
“That way people who work can come to the evening ones and some people who aren’t available in the evenings, or the older people who don’t like to come out in the evenings, so we do it in the day,” said Austintown library clerk Cindy Mawhinney, who conducts the classes.
During each monthly class the attendees make cards, but Mawhinney said she adds another small project to it. The project for Jan. 23 was embossing, which is the process of creating raised images and designs in paper and other materials. The supplies for the project included paper, stamps, punches, ink pads, paper cutters and cleaner.
Mawhinney worked for Michaels craft store for 10 years as an event coordinator, making her well-qualified to teach the classes.
“My supervisor [Linda Kucalaba] asked me because she knew I did this on my own,” she said of how the classes started. “She asked me if I wanted to do it here and share it with library patrons.”
One of the five attendees on Jan. 23 was Kate McAllen of Youngstown, who said while she’s not a crafty person by nature, felt Mawhinney was a good teacher who would lead her to make a creative card.
“We have a lot more talent than we really know,” she said. “If I can make something like this in the end, I’m going to be impressed with myself.”
McAllen was asked what made her want to sign up for the class.
“I saw the article in the Vindicator and I was so happy to see a class offered that was local, that was something of interest,” she said. “In the end it’s going to save money.”
