1 dead in Salem fire

SALEM — One person died in a fatal fire at an apartment complex this morning.

The fire department arrived at 849 E. 3rd St. at 10:32 a.m. to handle the flames, and cleared the scene in the afternoon.

The victim was described as an adult female. A cat also perished. Two other people were taken to the hospital for smoke inhalation. A firefighter also went to the hospital for chest pains.

The Ohio State Fire Marshal is investigating the cause. The damage to the property, owned by McClung Rental Properties, is about $15,000, fire officials said.
