How much is a serving? Most Americans don’t know, and that’s one of the factors contributing to the obesity epidemic in the United States.

Learn what constitutes a single serving and how to manage portion size during the “Healthy Eating for You: Portion Control” workshop from 12:30 to 2 p.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave. SE.

The presentation by registered dietician and community educator Bridget Lackey includes an informational discussion and question and answer time. The event, free and open to the public, is provided by Mercy Health Youngstown.

Nancy McCurdy Montagna, local author and inspirational speaker, will present a free workshop, “Masterminds: Be the Master of Your Own,” from 5 to 7 p.m. March 12 at the Mocha House, 467 High St. Montagna’s book, “What’s Behind that Beautiful Smile: My Journey with Bipolar Disorder,” will be offered for sale.

Clinic planned

GIRARD

A well-child immunization clinic is planned March 12 in the Girard Health Department located in the City Building, 100 W. Main St.

Parents must pre-register children before the clinic by calling Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at 330-545-6048 for an appointment. A $10 fee is charged per child.

Parents are reminded to bring a copy of the child’s immunization record and that a parent or guardian must accompany children under 18.

Incontinence after surgery is one of the most-feared side effects of prostate cancer treatment.

Learn how others cope during the next meeting of the Man Up Mahoning Valley Prostate Cancer Support Group from 5:15 to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at Partners for Urology Health, 6262 Mahoning Ave.

Prostate cancer survivor Steve Burbrink will facilitate the conversation and describe his own cancer diagnosis, treatments and personal experiences.

Ostomy support

Elaine Pearce, a clinical dietitian at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, will discuss nutrition for individuals living with ostomies during a meeting of the Youngstown Area Ostomy Support Group from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. March 10 at Humility House, 755 Ohltown Road, Austintown.

Sponsored by Mercy Health, the event is free and open to ostomy patients, families and friends.

Refreshments are provided and parking is free.

Free workshop

YOUNGSTOWN

“Youth Mental Health First Aid,” a free workshop offered by the Mahoning County Mental Health and Recovery Board and the Martin P. Joyce Juvenile Justice Center in conjunction with “Sandy Hook Promise,” is from 8 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. March 23 at the main public library, 305 Wick Ave.

The course is for anyone working with adolescents.
