Youngstown Minority Health director is Leigh Greene-Colvin

The Youngstown District Board of Health has requested $25,000 from the city and applied for a $42,500 grant from the Ohio Commission on Minority Health to fund a full-time director for the Youngstown Office of Minority Health.
Under the proposal, the city would be the primary financial sponsor of the Youngstown Office of Minority Health program and the state grant, if approved, would subsidize YOMH’s operation, said Erin Bishop, city health commissioner, at Monday’s health board meeting.
The YOMH director is Leigh Greene-Colvin, a private contractor who is paid $20 per hour and has no city benefits, Bishop said.
An upcoming YOMH event is a Citywide Baby Shower and Community Health Fair on March 28 at Arlington Heights Recreation Center, 767 Park Ave.
The health fair, funded by the Ohio Commission on Minority Health, is set for 10 a.m. to noon, and the baby shower, offered by YOMH, will take place from noon to 2 p.m.
The combined event includes vendors such as Mercy Health, Akron Children’s Hospital, and Help Me Grow, which offer information on safe sleep for babies, how to increase time between and prevent unwanted pregnancies, Greene-Colvin said.
The emphasis is on improving infant mortality in Youngstown, she said. For information, call 330-743-3333, ext. 238.
Bishop urged city employees to sign up for health screenings Monday and next Tuesday that are offered free under the Work at Health Program.
The times and sites for the Monday screenings are 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the City Health Department, Oakhill Renaissance Place, 345 Oak Hill Ave., and 1 to 4 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1, 420 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd.; and for next Tuesday, 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. at City Hall, Sixth Floor, 26 S. Phelps St., and 1 to 4 p.m. at the City Water Treatment Plant, 725 Poland Ave.
Bishop said numerous free screenings are available, including the A1C, used to diagnose type 1 and type 2 diabetes, and several other tests for which there are charges ranging from $6 to $65.76.
