Senior bowling tourney set for March 21-22

The Youngstown-Salem USBC Women’s Bowling Association’s 23rd annual Senior Tournament is set for March 21-22 at Holiday Bowl, 777 Youngstown-Poland Rd.
Bowlers can compete either day. On March 21, one squad is scheduled at 2 p.m. Squad times on March 22 are 11 a.m. or 2 p.m.
There will be five divisions: Class AA (77 and older), Class A (70-76), Class B (65-69), Class C (60-64) and Class D (55-59).
The cost is $17. Entries close on March 14.

Nadal wins 1st title in nearly 9 months
BUENOS AIRES, Argentina
Rafael Nadal won his first title in nearly nine months Sunday after defeating Juan Monaco 6-4, 6-1 at the Argentina Open.
The top-seeded Spaniard hadn’t reached a final since winning at Roland Garros last year.
It was Nadal’s 46th title on clay, moving him within three of the record set by Argentine Guillermo Vilas when he played in the 1970s and early 1980s.
Nadal broke Monaco’s serve late in the first set to take a 1-0 lead against the 60th-ranked Argentine, then dominated the second to close out the match in 1 hour, 26 minutes.
Duquesne player from Florida kills self
PITTSBURGH
A Duquesne University football player who also played for the University of Florida has killed himself.
The Allegheny County medical examiner’s office in Pittsburgh says 22-year-old Chris Johnson died Friday of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Johnson was found in a car in Churchill, just east of Pittsburgh. The medical examiner ruled his death a suicide.
Johnson was a senior defensive back from Ocala, Florida. He transferred from Florida to Duquesne in 2013. In two seasons with the Duquesne University Dukes he made 104 tackles, had two interceptions and forced two fumbles.
Yankees’ Rodriguez nears 1st spring game
TAMPA, Fla.
Alex Rodriguez feels fine after his first week of workouts, and will leave the decision of when he makes his spring training debut to New York Yankees manager Joe Girardi.
The Yankees begin exhibition play Tuesday against Philadelphia at the Phillies’ camp.
“I’ll talk to Joe first,” Rodriguez said Sunday. “If I’m in the lineup, I’ll play, yeah. So far, so good. No setbacks.”
Girardi said he’ll announce today whether Rodriguez will be in the lineup for the spring opener.
Famed coach Gillespie dies at age 88
JOLIET, Ill.
Gordie Gillespie, one of the winningest coaches in college baseball history who also had success coaching football and basketball, has died. He was 88.
The University of St. Francis said Gillespie died Saturday night at his home in Joliet. He spent a quarter-century of his 59-year career as the baseball coach at the NAIA school.
Gillespie had 2,402 wins in four sports, though he is most remembered for his accomplishments on the baseball diamond.
He retired in 2011 with 1,893 victories, which were the most in college baseball at that time at any level. Texas’ Augie Garrido passed Gillespie last year.
Kelly Clark wins snowboard halfpipe
PARK CITY, Utah
Kelly Clark won the snowboard halfpipe in the U.S. Grand Prix on Sunday for her second FIS World Cup victory of the season, easily beating 18-year-old American teammate Arielle Gold.
The 31-year-old Clark, from West Dover, Vermont, had a 94.50-point run. She won the gold medal in Park City in the 2002 Olympics.
Clark won the overall Sprint U.S. Grand Prix tour title.
Gold, from Steamboat Springs, Colorado, had an 88.75.
