Ohio will begin its annual release of rainbow trout in public lakes and ponds at a lake in southern Ohio.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources says the first release will be at Adams Lake in Adams County on Friday. The agency will release more than 98,000 rainbow trout into 63 public lakes and ponds through May.

Rainbow trout are a cold water species that do not naturally reproduce in Ohio waters. The releases allow anglers to pursue a fish they may not otherwise have the opportunity to catch. The trout are raised at state fish hatcheries and measure 10 to 13 inches before they are released. The daily catch limit for inland lakes is five.

Several locations will have special events during the releases.
