Canfield’s Letscher wins district bowling title, state berth

LORAIN
Canfield High School bowler Andrew Letscher rolled games of 225, 267 and 226 for a 718 series and was the top performer in the Division I district tournament at Rebman Recreation Center on Sunday.
Letscher was the lone qualifier for the Division I boys state tournament March 14 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
Warren Harding High School’s boys team finished third behind Nordonia and Brunswick with a pinfall of 4,010 to earn a state tournament berth. Nordonia and Brunswick were tied with 4,083 pins and went to a ninth- and 10th-frame roll-off. Nordonia won, 46-39.
Green (3,971), Akron Springfield (3,963) and North Ridgeville (3,961) also qualified for state.
Harding’s Tavish Burd rolled a 642 series, including a game of 255. Both were seventh-best in the tournament. Harding’s Alec Adair had a game of 256, good for sixth-best.
Boardman’s girls team also secured a state tournament berth by finishing third in the district tournament with 3,559 pins. Massillon Perry (3,580) and Mentor (3,562) were the top two teams. Green (3,545) and North Olmsted (3,530) also qualified for state.
The girls tournament is March 13 at Wayne Webb’s Columbus Bowl.
Boardman’s Lexi Chismar had the high game among local bowlers in the girls district tournament with a 209, good for 12th place overall.
Howland’s Alycia Bailes rolled a 536 series to place 13th overall. She just missed becoming an individual state tournament qualifier.
Austintown Fitch’s Jessica Halas was 20th overall with a 527 series.
The Division II state tournaments are March 6-7 in Columbus. Boys teams from Struthers, Hubbard and Lakeview qualified in the distirct tournament Saturday. LaBrae’s Brandon Bergstrom was an individual qualifier.
Girls teams from Cardinal Mooney and Hubbard qualified Saturday, as did Struthers’ Jamie King.
