City police say cab driver thwarted robbery

YOUNGSTOWN — A 36-year-old cab driver told police someone tried to rob him about 2:30 a.m. as he went to pick up a fare at a bar in the 2600 block of South Avenue.

Reports said the driver told police he was going east on East Indianola Avenue when a man in the roadway walked up to the cab, got in, pressed a shiny object to the driver's head and demanded money.

The driver then reached for his pistol and the man in the back seat got out and ran away, reports said.

Nothing was taken.
