A Girard woman is set to appear in Girard Municipal Court today on drug charges after her arrest in the township Friday evening.

Officers arrested Rachel Thomas, 34, after searching a vehicle parked in the lot of the Lamp Post Lounge on Belmont Avenue. According to a police report, officers approached the vehicle after the business had closed due the vehicle’s “suspicious” nature.

Thomas, the vehicle’s passenger, said she worked at the lounge and was waiting for its owner. Thomas could not produce identification, and officers found a suspected crack pipe, four hypodermic needles, copper filter, and two burnt spoons with residue on them in her purse.

Police took Thomas into custody on charges of possession of drug-abuse instruments and drug paraphernalia. Officers then transferred custody of Thomas to the Mahoning County jail because there was a warrant for her arrest out of that county.

Traffic stop ends with drug charges

A traffic stop at 3rd Street and Wilson Avenue on Friday evening resulted in charges of possession of drugs and drug paraphernalia being filed against those in the vehicle.

Police stopped the vehicle because of objects hanging from the rear-view mirror, a police report states.

According to the report, the officers conducted a search and found the driver, Saqoyia Harris, 24, of Youngstown, possessed 1.8 grams of suspected marijuana and a suspected marijuana pipe in her purse. She is charged with drug possession and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Police also searched the purse of the passenger, 22-year-old Cashawn Lavette Craig of Youngstown, and found 1.3 grams of suspected marijuana, the report states. She also is charged with drug possession.

They were released and issued a summons to appear in Campbell Municipal Court at 9 a.m. Friday.

Free computer classes

The Trumbull Community Action Program is offering free computer classes for seniors from 10 to 11 a.m. beginning Thursday at the TCAP offices at 1230 Palmyra Road S.W.

Keyboard and mouse skills to basic Internet usage are among the topics covered during the classes on Thursdays in the Robin Elzy Learning Center. Call 330-393-2507, exts. 270 or 290, for information and to reserve a seat in the class.

Road closing

WARREN

Palmyra Road, between Hewitt Gifford Road and Kibler Toot Road, will be closed for a bridge replacement being performed by A.P. O’Horo Co. of Youngstown from Monday through Oct. 31.

The recommended detour route is West on Hewitt Gifford Road, North on Leavitt Road and East on Risher Road.

Bridge closing

SALEM

The West State Street (state Route 14) bridge in Salem, Columbiana County, will be closed to traffic starting Monday for 140 days. The road closure is for a $3 million bridge deck replacement project.

Beginning at the intersection of U.S. Route 62, state Route 173 and state Route 45 west of Salem, traffic will be detoured north on U.S. 62 to state Route 165, east to state Route 46, south back to state Route 14, and reverse.

The structure is expected to be reopened by late November.

ODOT’s contractor is Marucci and Gaffney Excavating Co. of Youngstown, and the overall completion date is June 2016.

Road closing for race

KINSMAN

Mayburn Corners-Barclay Road between state Routes 5 and 7 in Kinsman will be closed from 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Sunday for the Burghill Vernon Fire Department Firefighter Firecracker 5k Race. Traffic control assistance will be provided from Burghill Vernon Fire Department, Trumbull County Sheriff’s office and the Kinsman Police Department.

Entire closure will be from the intersection of Mayburn Corners-Barclay Road and state Route 5, southeast to state Route 7 and south to state Route 88. The recommended detour route it south on state Route 5 and east on state Route 88.

Lawn equipment stolen

LIBERTY

Residents of Logan Way reported $680 worth of stolen lawn equipment Saturday.

One of the victims reported those responsible likely stole the property from the residence’s attached garage while he and his wife were in their home. The method of entry into the garage is unknown.

Vehicle leaves scene of accident in Niles

NILES

City police say someone left the scene of an accident Monday evening after striking a tree on Niles-Vienna Road near Union Cemetery.

When police responded to the scene, the vehicle, reportedly a pickup truck, had already left the scene after causing “heavy damage” to the tree near the cemetery, police said.
