Mancini to attend opening of pavilion

cHESTER

Mountaineer Casino Racetrack & Resort will cut the ribbon on its 9,800 square-foot smoking pavilion, the largest outdoor smoking area of its kind in the country, at 10 a.m. Wednesday.

Former lightweight boxing champion and Youngstown native Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini will be on hand to help casino officials cut the ribbon, along with state, county and local elected officials and representatives from the West Virginia lottery.

The pavilion was designed with the input of Hancock County officials, in compliance with the county’s smoking ban that goes into effect July 1. It includes more than 200 slot machines, including brand-new reel and video slot machines, as well as six table games. It has a separate entrance from the casino, as well as two entrances inside the casino. Pavilion guests will have convenient access to parking.

‘All Things’ host will step down

WASHINGTON

NPR says Melissa Block is stepping down as host of the flagship newsmagazine “All Things Considered” after 12 years anchoring the national broadcast.

The public radio network said Monday that Block will become a special correspondent for NPR, producing profiles, long-form stories and series on critical issues of the day. Block will also guest host NPR programs and develop podcasts from her reporting.

NPR has not announced who will replace Block. “All Things Considered” is co-hosted by Robert Siegel and Audie Cornish. The newsmagazine draws about 12 million listeners a week. Block’s last broadcast is Aug. 14.

Block is a 30-year veteran of NPR.
