Crash in Southington kills Middlefield man

SOUTHINGTON

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a fatal one-vehicle car crash that occurred Saturday night.

Troopers responded to the scene at state Route 534 and Warren Painesville Road in Trumbull County about 9:12 p.m.

Aaron D. Smith, 35, of Middlefield was the driver and only occupant of the vehicle.

He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Smith was heading westbound on Warren Painesville. The patrol’s preliminary investigation shows “unsafe speed” to be the cause.

The patrol said it believes that alcohol also was a factor.

The Trumbull County Sheriff’s office, the Ohio Department of Transportation, Southington Fire Department and Champion Fire Department also were on the scene as assisting agencies.
