Girl Scouts seek nominations for awards of distinction

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

The Girl Scouts of Northeast Ohio are announcing that nominations for the 2015 Women of Distinction, Leaders of Tomorrow and Advancing Women awards are open through July 10.

The Women of Distinction Award winners are selected for their positive influence as business, community, and civic leaders dedicated to supporting opportunities for women and girls.

Past recipients of the award include state Sen. Capri S. Cafaro of Liberty, D-32nd; Ann Brennan; first lady of Cleveland Edwina Jackson; and former state Sen. Shirley Smith.

A special recognition and scholarship also will be given to three high-school Girl Scouts who show promise of being the Leaders of Tomorrow, and the Advancing Women Award recognizes a company or organization that demonstrates a proven commitment to advancing women in the workplace.

Affiliation with Girl Scouts is not required to receive the awards. Being a role model for girls and exemplifying the highest ideals of Girl Scouting as reflected in the Girl Scout Promise and Law is required, however.

Nominations are open and will be judged by an independent panel. Winners will be notified in August and recognized at a special luncheon at 11 a.m. Sept. 25 at The Union Club in Cleveland.
