2015 ATHLETES OF THE YEAR

They are multi-sport standouts in an age of specialization, athletes capable of leading their teams deep in the postseason of more than one season.

Austintown Fitch senior Joe Harrington did his damage year-round, wreaking havoc at wide receiver for Fitch’s football team in the fall, then sprinting into the Falcons’ record books in track and field in the winter and the spring. He finished his career with 10 school records as a standout sprinter, earning All-Ohio honors in outdoor track nine times and indoor track six times.

Canfield senior Rachel Tinkey, meanwhile, was a four-year starter in basketball and softball, surpassing 1,000 points on the court and earning All-Ohio honors as a shortstop on the diamond. Tinkey also finished with a 4.026 grade point average in the classroom.

Harrington will run track at Akron and Tinkey will play basketball at Mount Union. They’ll arrive with one last award next to their name — Vindicator athletes of the year.
