Man, 19, killed in crash in Columbiana County

LISBON

A 19-year-old man was killed in a crash on State Route 164 shortly after 5 p.m. Thursday.

Marcus K. Walter of Summitville was killed after his car went left of center and struck an oncoming vehicle driven by Joshua J. Forney, 28, of Leetonia. Forney was transported to St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for treatment.

The Ohio Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.

Warren man assaulted when letting his dog out

WARREN

A man, 58, of the 2200 block of Hamilton Street Southwest, reported that two males robbed him near the back door of his house at 5:45 p.m. Wednesday when he went out his back door to let his dog out.

One of the two men put a handgun to the victim’s forehead, then both males punched him in the head and body before running away.

Hubbard police probe attempted bank holdup

HUBBARD

The city police department is looking for a man who attempted to rob the PNC Bank at 70 W. Liberty St. on Thursday.

According to a news release, police said the man, a white male, passed a note to a teller about 2:20 p.m. He then grabbed the note and left without any money.

He was last seen wearing nylon gym shorts, a gray pullover hoodie, a baseball hat that said BROWNS on it, and a batting glove on his right hand. He fled in a black SUV.

2 injured in Brookfield

BROOKFIELD

The Ohio State Highway Patrol is investigating a two-vehicle crash that injured two people on state Route 82 on Thursday afternoon.

Troopers told 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner, a vehicle driven by Porter Mitchell, 56, from Vienna, pulled out from Warner Road and into the path of a minivan on Route 82.

The minivan, driven by John Lennon, 49, of Warren struck the side of the Mitchell’s vehicle.

Both drivers were transported to St. Elizabeth Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Troopers say Mitchell was wearing a seat belt. Lennon was not buckled up.

Traffic at the scene was diverted from Route 82 eastbound by the Brookfield and Vienna Fire Departments for approximately 30 minutes.

Niles man arraigned

NILES

Anthony J. Vaccaro, 25, of North Pleasant Avenue, was arraigned Wednesday in Niles Municipal Court on an aggravated robbery charge after he purportedly forced a man at gunpoint to go to an ATM machine and withdraw cash just after midnight Monday. Vaccaro was arrested Tuesday night. Judge Thomas Townley set bond at $15,000. No plea was required on the charge because it is a felony.

Charges to grand jury

GIRARD

Four charges filed against Joshua L. Wauer, 29, of Bonnie Brae Avenue Northeast, Warren, were bound over to a Trumbull County grand jury Thursday.

Wauer is charged with felonious assault, felony assault and two counts of misdemeanor assault in a 2:24 a.m. Sunday confrontation with four people near North Main Street in Hubbard.

He was released from jail later Thursday after Judge Jeff Adler of Girard Municipal Court reduced his bond to $10,000 with electronically monitored house arrest.

Hubbard police said Wauer attacked two men in a car, purportedly after they made sexual comments about his girlfriend.

Wauer is also accused of punching a 33-year-old Hubbard man who tried to intervene. The man suffered a skull fracture when his head hit the ground, police said.

Police said Wauer is also accused of punching a female in the face, knocking her unconscious.

Road closing extended

HARTFORD

The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office previously announced the closing of Custer Orangeville Road in Hartford Township between state Routes 305 and 609 for a culvert replacement through today. The engineers, however, have extended this closing through July 2.

The recommended detour route is west on state Route 305, north on state Route 7 and east on state Route 609.

Kinsman road closing

KINSMAN

The Trumbull County Engineer’s Office is announcing the closing of Burnett East Road between Mayburn Corners Barclay Road and state Route 5 in Kinsman Township from today through Monday. It will be closed for a sanitary sewer installation being performed by Marucci and Gaffney Excavating Co. from Youngstown.

The recommended detour route is south on state Route 5 and northwest on Mayburn Corners Barclay Road.

Liberty trustees meet

LIBERTY

The Liberty Township trustees will have a special meeting at 1 p.m. today at the administration building, 1315 Church Hill-Hubbard Road. The meeting will adjourn to executive session to discuss legal issues.

Intersection work

LISBON

Work is expected to begin Monday on a safety-improvement project at state Route 7 and Bell School Road in Columbiana County.

To improve safety and access for the new Beaver Local K-12 campus, ODOT is investing $1.25 million to widen state Route 7 at the intersection of Bell School Road. A left-turn lane in the southbound direction will be constructed as well as a new traffic signal. Additionally, the project will include the minor realignment of Bell School Road to improve the intersection angle.

ODOT’s contractor is Marucci and Gaffney Excavating Co. All work is expected to be completed by the fall.

Girlfriend, sister report assault

WARREN

Karl D. Sena, 24, of Idylwild Street Northwest, was taken to the Trumbull County jail early Thursday, charged with two counts of felonious assault after he purportedly assaulted his girlfriend and mother with a knife.

Police arrested Sena at the Idylwild address at 12:30 a.m. after the women alleged that Sena lunged several times at his girlfriend with a knife, cutting a hole in her pants but not injuring her.

Sena’s mother attempted to pull Sena away from the other woman, but Sena stabbed his mother in the hand.

Ribbon-cutting set for Liberty sidewalk

LIBERTY

Liberty Township will host a ribbon-cutting for a township sidewalk ending at state Route 304 and Shady Road at 1 p.m. Wednesday. The new sidewalk was paid in full through the Ohio Department of Transportation’s Safe Routes to School program.
