YOUNGSTOWN

Expect about 2 more inches of rain in most of the Mahoning Valley starting tonight.

The heavy rain should start close to midnight and turn to lighter rain late Saturday morning, said Eric Wilhelm, chief meteorologist for 21 WFMJ-TV, The Vindicator’s broadcast partner.

“Just what we don’t need,” Wilhelm said.

The Valley had 6.1 inches of rain in June as of Thursday afternoon, according to National Weather Service statistics.

The area averages 3.79 inches for the entire month.

The record for the most rain in June is 10.66 inches in 1986.

Two more inches of rain likely will mean this June will eclipse the third-rainiest June, which occurred in 1957 with 6.97 inches.

The rain Sunday will be “pretty light and spotty,” Wilhelm said.

The high temperature Sunday will be only 64 degrees, according to the NWS. That’s the lowest high temperature for the Valley since June 1, when it hit only 52 degrees.

“Sunday will be a very autumnlike day,” Wilhelm said.

After the weekend, the area will warm up and should be drier.

“There won’t be any big-ticket heavy-rain events,” Wilhelm said. “There will be some spotty stuff, but no super-heavy rain once we’re done with the weekend.”

There could be isolated storms Monday and Tuesday. The forecast calls for it to be sunny with highs in the mid-70s Wednesday and Thursday.
