Italian NHS inducts new members

The Boardman High School chapter of the Societ Onoraria Italica, the Italian National Honor Society, the Maria Montessori chapter, recently had its annual induction ceremony on May 15.

Sixteen juniors were inducted in the event, as well as one honorary member, Mr. Eric Simione, a social studies teacher at Boardman. The ceremony featured a performance of the national anthem by Boardman alumnus Brittany Best, taking the society’s pledge and the signing of the chapter’s ledger by the inductees.

The 2015 officers and executive committee led the event, recognizing famous historical Italian-Americans, lighting the candles which represent the chapter’s main principles and the presentation of the official banner. Refreshments were enjoyed by all attendees following the ceremony.

The Boardman High School Chapter took its name from Maria Montessori, the founder of the internationally-acclaimed Montessori school. The first woman to graduate from the University of Rome with a degree in medicine, her methods of teaching emphasized letting students choose what they want to study and studying it at their own pace. The chapter is the only one of its kind in the state of Ohio, and was founded by Maddalena Amero, Bernice Mazzella and Eleanor Sacco, all of whom have taught Italian at Boardman. Along with Amero, it is currently advised by Marianne Keifer and Liliana McElhaney, both of whom also teach Italian.

Juniors inducted were Anthony Bell, Anthony Bruno, Alexa Caraballo, Franchesca Cardillo, Sarah Childs, Anna DeAngelo, Hayley Eicher, Vincent Huzicka, Sabrina Kurelko, Julia Madick, Veronica Marcella, Amber McMillan, Natalie Pilolli, Anna Saxton, Mark Slavens and Ryan Sweeney.
