The Canfield High School Soccer Boosters had its annual Soccer Kid’s Camp for Canfield Soccer Club recreational league players June 15-19. The boosters sponsored the youth soccer camp, which took place at the Herbert Road Fields, in conjunction with the Canfield High School boys and girls soccer team members and Coach Phil Simone.
Each day, 45 high school players helped approximately 70 campers from ages 5-13 practice passing, shooting, dribbling or defense with an emphasis on individual skills, teamwork, sportsmanship and fun. The campers moved from station to station to learn the different skills.
Each day of the camp had a theme, including Monday as USA Day, during which campers celebrated the United States by wearing red, white and blue clothing and accessories; Tuesday as Crazy Socks Day, during which campers wore any type of silly socks; Wednesday as Red and Black Day, during which campers wore red and black to support their Canfield Cardinals camp coaches; Thursday as Beach Day, during which campers could wear their most colorful and/or flowery outfit, or bathing suit and Friday was Women’s World Cup Day, during which campers were encouraged to wear their Kid‘s Camp T-shirt.
As a special treat, the Canfield Cardinal Joint Fire District visited the fields during the camp to cool off the campers with their fire hoses.
The camp is a fundraiser for Canfield High School Soccer Boosters, with the proceeds going to the program for various team expenses, including purchasing new uniforms.
Cheryl McGrath served a chairperson of the camp. Each camper received a T-shirt, popsicles and were entered into daily prize drawings.
“The camp is a long-standing tradition for the CHS soccer program. It gives our high school kids the opportunity to give back to the youth of Canfield by sharing their skills and talents,” McGrath said.
The Canfield High School soccer program will also sponsor its annual Cardinal Classic soccer tournament July 11-12, with 44 schools participating.
