Flag-disposal ceremony planned

POLAND

The Sons of the American Legion, Mahoning Valley Squadron 15, is having its 14th annual Flag Disposal Ceremony at 8:30 p.m. Saturday at the War Memorial Building, Post 15 Home, 35 Cort-land St.

The public is invited to attend and participate in the ceremony at which worn, frayed, torn faded American flags are honorably retired by burning. Flags to be disposed of can be dropped off at the Post Home beginning at 7:30 p.m. the day of the ceremony.

The event is conducted in conjunction with the annual “Celebrate Poland,” which includes fireworks beginning at 10 p.m.

Bridge closing

YOUNGSTOWN

The Market Street bridge between Woodland Avenue and Boardman Street, as well as Front Street between South Champion and South Phelps streets, will be closed from 6 p.m. Friday through midnight Saturday for the 2015 Slide the City event. This includes setup and tear-down time.

Suspects sought

NORTH LIMA

Beaver Township Police are searching for two men who may be serial shoplifters, reported Vindicator broadcast news partner 21 WFMJ-TV.

Workers at the Sheetz in North Lima told police they believe two men were seen shoplifting hundreds of packs of chewing gum and candy bars.

Investigators say the crimes took place June 14.

Police said similar thefts took place at the Sheetz stores in Canfield and Austintown. The suspects may have been driving a black Chevrolet Cruze, the TV station reported.

Registering online

COLUMBUS

Eligible Ohioans would be able to register to vote online under legislation approved by the Ohio Senate on Wednesday. SB 63 passed on a vote of 31-1 and heads to the Ohio House for further consideration.

The secretary of state’s office already allows voters to verify and update their address and registration information online. That system, accessible at my-ohiovote.com, has been in place for several years.

Mosquito spraying

NILES

Spraying for mosquito control for Niles is scheduled for Monday after 6 p.m. In the event of rain Monday, the spraying will be postponed until Tuesday.

Those with respiratory problems are urged to remain indoors with windows closed during the spraying. Food should not be prepared or left outside during the spraying period. All pets should be taken indoors.

Public hearing

NILES

The Niles City School District will have a public hearing Friday to obtain community input on the rules and regulations of Federal Entitlement Programs and the Individuals with Disabilities Act expenditure of federal funds. The meeting will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. at the administrative offices, 309 N. Rhodes Ave. Anyone unable to attend the meetings who would like to provide input should call Scott A.
