Mountaineer readies smoking pavilion

CHESTER, W.VA.

The Hancock County Clean Air Act goes into effect July 1, and on that day Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort will cut the ribbon on its 9,800 square-foot smoking pavilion, the largest outdoor smoking area of its kind in the country.

The pavilion, a $2 million investment in the property, will feature 210 slot machines — including brand-new reel and video slot machines — as well as six table games. It will have a separate entrance from the casino, as well as two entrances inside the casino, and pavilion guests will have convenient access to parking.

“With the opening of this pavilion, we are offering our guests the best of both worlds: if you are looking for a smoke-free environment we can provide that, while accommodating our smoking guests in a comfortable environment,” said Mountaineer General Manager Chris Kern.

The pavilion is being built by removing two exterior walls of an unused gaming area and installing a 12-foot high decorative wall. The pavilion will include radiant heaters, large ceiling fans and wind shears.

“Hancock County is proud to be home to such a pioneer in the gaming industry and a great community partner,” said Michael Swartzmiller, president of the Hancock County commission. “Mountaineer was the first racino in the country, the first major East Coast gaming destination outside of Atlantic City, and has now built the largest smoking pavilion of its kind in the country.”
