California hospital sees trio of triplets born in June

FRESNO, Calif.

Doctors at a central California hospital have seen a trio of triplets born this month and expect the streak to continue.

The Fresno Bee reported Monday that one set of triplets was born at Community Regional Medical Center in Fresno the week of June 7, followed by another set June 18 and the third set three days later.

Dr. Steven Elliott says he can’t remember in his 30 years as a neonatologist when he has had a trio of triplets under his care. He says all nine babies were born by cesarean section and are doing well.

The newspaper reports that another mother who’s expecting triplets in late August is receiving care at the Fresno hospital.

Triplets occur in about 120 of every 100,000 live births in the country.

Teacher: Putting boy in trash can was meant to calm him

MARIETTA, Ga.

A Georgia special-education teacher who was accused of holding an autistic boy upside-down and lowering him head-first into a trash can while comparing him to Oscar the Grouch says she was trying to calm the boy, not hurt him.

At a school system hearing Monday near Atlanta, Mary Katherine Pursley said the second-grader was screaming and upset April 30, and she was trying to “shake out the grouchy.”

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a panel of former educators at the hearing will decide whether she’s dismissed from Cobb County Schools.

Separately, Pursley faces a felony charge of first-degree cruelty to children.

Her lawyer, Warren Fortson, said her actions were not inappropriate, and that she has used characters such as Oscar the Grouch to help calm special-education students.

Missing pet tortoise found couple of miles away in Pa.

BELLEFONTE, Pa.

A pet tortoise that was either stolen or escaped from its backyard pen in central Pennsylvania has been found.

WJAC-TV reports someone in Spring Township, Centre County, saw the animal and posted a picture of it on Facebook – not realizing it was the same pet reported missing June 6.

Someone saw the post and reported it to the owner of the missing tortoise – named Teddy – and now the animal has been reunited with its owner.

Police initially investigated the tortoise’s disappearance as a theft, because the owner didn’t believe the animal was capable of escaping its pen.

The station reported Monday that it’s still not clear how the tortoise wound up where it was found, a couple of miles away.
