Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley on Tuesday dedicated a renovated unit, the Alexis Caroline Watanakunakorn Special Care Nursery at the Beeghly campus.

The 18-bed nursery has 15 individual patient rooms, including three twin rooms, one room to accommodate triplets and one family overnight room.

A $1 million gift from Eleanor Watanakunakorn helped fund the project. It came as part of the Building on the Promise: Vision for Our Valley’s Children campaign, a multiyear, fundraising effort. The new SCN is named in honor of her granddaughter, Alexis Caroline Watanakunakorn.

Man pleads not guilty

A township man accused of shooting a BB gun from his Indianola Road home at neighbors’ homes and vehicles pleaded not guilty to criminal damaging and obstructing official business charges.

Jeffrey Bachani, 22, appeared in Mahoning County Area Court here Tuesday. He is accused of damaging properties on Indianola, Euclid Boulevard and Tudor Lane.

The bond he previously posted was continued. He was ordered not to have contact with the alleged victims. A date for another court appearance has not been set.

Woman robbed, hit in face with gun

YOUNGSTOWN

A woman waiting for a bus at Elm Street and New York Avenue about 10 p.m. Monday was hit in the face with a gun during a robbery and lost several teeth, reports said.

The woman told police a car drove up to her with a female driver, and a man in the passenger’s seat pointed a gun at her and demanded her purse.

The woman refused and the man struck her above an eye with a gun.

The man took the purse, then hit her in the mouth with the gun, reports said. The woman was treated at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital.

Boardman police investigate robbery

Township police are investigating after a family reported catching a suspect burglarizing their Southern Boulevard home.

A woman told police that she was home with her two children about 4 a.m. Tuesday when someone entered the residence and stole her purse.

She said she was awakened in the middle of the night by the sound of a window opening. Her son reportedly saw someone climbing out of a living room window.

An alarm at Valley Christian School, located on Southern Boulevard, also reportedly sounded about the same time as the home burglary.

3 females rob man

AUSTINTOWN

A man was robbed of $100 after he invited three females to his motel room for “fun.”

A police report said a 41-year-old Texas man met three females outside of Hollywood Gaming at Mahoning Valley Race Course who asked him to have “fun.” He went with them to his hotel room at the Econo Lodge on Seventy-Six Drive where he invited them in to “rest.”

He took a shower, and when he came out his pants, and wallet, were gone. The females later called him and said his pants were at Arby’s, 701 N. Canfield-Niles Road. He retrieved his pants and wallet but $100 in cash was taken.

There was surveillance video of him leaving the racino with the women and township detectives are investigating.

Boardman man faces multiple charges

A township man accused of falsely reporting a robbery after accidentally shooting himself in the hand pleaded not guilty to making false alarms and obstructing official business.

Vernon Johnson, 21, of Prestwick Drive, appeared in Mahoning County Area Court here Tuesday, where he also faces felony charges of possessing a weapon while being prohibited from doing so, and receiving stolen property.

The weapons under disability charge stems from the fact that Johnson is under felony indictments in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court, including a carrying concealed weapons charge, and therefore cannot carry a weapon, according to a police report.

The bond he previously posted was continued. The date for another court appearance has not been set.
