Batavia pitchers perfect against Scrappers

— The Mahoning Valley Scrappers scored a combined 26 runs in the first two games of a series against the Batavia Muckdogs.

But the Scrappers couldn't even muster a baserunner in Wednesday night's finale at Dwyer Stadium.

Batavia pitchers Gabriel Castellanos, Brett Lilek and Steve Farnsworth combined on a perfect game — the third in New York-Penn League history — as the Muckdogs beat the Scrappers, 1-0.

Castellanos worked the first seven innings, struck out 12 batters and got the win. Lilek struck out the side in the eighth and Farnsworth pitched a perfect ninth for the save.

The Muckdogs scored the game's only run when Korey Dunbar and Taylor Munden hit back-to-back doubles with one out in the second inning.

Batavia (1-5) had lost its first five games to start the season. The Muckdogs had committed at least three errors in each of those defeats, including four in an 11-2 loss to the Scrappers on Tuesday night.

The Scrappers (3-3) began the season with six road games. Mahoning Valley's home opener is Thursday night against the State College Spikes at Eastwood Field in Niles.

The first pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
