1963: Cardinal Giovanni Battista Montini is chosen during a conclave of his fellow cardinals to succeed the late Pope John XXIII; the new pope takes the name Paul VI.
1964: Civil-rights workers Michael H. Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James E. Chaney were slain in Philadelphia, Miss.; their bodies are found buried in an earthen dam six weeks later.
1973: The U.S. Supreme Court, in Miller v. California, rules that states may ban materials found to be obscene according to local standards.
1982: A jury in Washington D.C. finds John Hinckley Jr. not guilty by reason of insanity in the shootings of President Ronald Reagan and three other men.

1975: Two 13-year-old Youngstown boys are pulled from the water of the North Side Pool. Lifeguard Linda Greco, 17, is credited with reviving Brian Gizzard, but efforts to revive Keith Rounsaville were unsuccessful. He was pronounced death at St. Elizabeth Hospital.
Three children of Paul and Marvel Gruenwald of New Bedford receive graduate degrees at Youngstown State University. Joseph Gruenwald received a masters of business administration; Cathy and Joseph both received master of science in education degrees.
Identical twins Lucy and Marjorie Works of Salem both join the Air Force and leave for basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas, after graduating from Leetonia High School.
1965: Mahoning County commissioners reject all bids for purchase of the former county home property on Herbert Road, saying the high bid of $100,000 by Youngstown Development Co. was too low.

1940: Spurred by an expanding demand for steel, Youngstown district steel output will hit 80 percent of capacity, with 21 blast furnaces and 66 open hearths in operation.
