To mark the end of the school year, fourth-grade students at Hilltop Elementary School participated in the school’s annual Field Day May 28.

The day, organized by Hilltop physical education teacher Linda Magyar, gave students the opportunity to play games, including water games and tug-of-war, and run races outside on the playground.

“Today is about the spirit of the game. It doesn’t matter who finishes first or who finishes last,” Magyar told the students.

Fourth-grade students started their field day with a water ball toss during which their teachers tossed them water balls and the students were soaked in the process and then a huge water balloon toss.

The students then moved on to some relay races, including a noodle relay, a relay during which they had to pass a ball over their head to the person behind them and then pass the ball over and under, sideways and then dribble. An egg and wooden spoon relay and a balance a Frisbee on their heads relay were also run.

The students then completed a hula hoop relay, a human chain hula hoop relay, and then showed off their hula hoop skills. They then played taxi cab with the noodle, during which students were ‘picked up’ and had to hang onto the noodle while going back to pick up everyone on the team.

The main event many students were looking forward to was the tug-of-war, which pitted boys and girls from each class against each other.

To end the fourth-grader’s field day, Magyar lined the students up for a sprint race and they took off running, with the boys racing the boys and then the girls racing the girls.

Before the students were sent back to class, they enjoyed a popsicle treat.

Each class level is able to enjoy their own field day, with the events planned for each grade level skill set and for the students to use skills they learned throughout the year in gym class. At each grade level, the teachers assisted Magyar during the races.
