Bengals waive QB Terrelle Pryor

CINCINNATI

The Bengals waived quarterback Terrelle Pryor at the conclusion of their minicamp on Thursday, leaving one less candidate for the job of backing up Andy Dalton.

The former Ohio State quarterback signed with the Bengals on May 10 following a tryout during rookie camp. He was competing with AJ McCarron and Josh Johnson for the backup job.

McCarron, a fifth-round draft pick, missed last season with a sore shoulder. Johnson returned to Cincinnati after spending the 2014 season with San Francisco. The competition for the No. 2 spot will be one of the areas of focus of training camp in July.

Oakland took Pryor in the third round of the 2011 supplemental draft. He played three seasons and started 16 games for the Raiders.

Wild waive Matt Cooke, will buy out contract

ST. PAUL, Minn.

The Minnesota Wild have placed veteran left wing Matt Cooke on waivers, for the purpose of granting him his unconditional release.

The Wild announced Thursday they will buy out the final season of Cooke’s contract, provided his clearance through waivers. He will become an unrestricted free agent eligible to sign with any team except Minnesota. The 36-year-old was set to make $3 million in 2015-16.

General manager Chuck Fletcher, in a statement from the team, said the move was a “difficult decision” driven by the desire for more flexibility under the salary cap.

Cooke missed two-thirds of the regular season, due to a hip injury and later sports hernia surgery. In 111 games with the Wild, he had 14 goals and 24 assists.

LSU suspends four players, including QB

BATON ROUGE, La.

LSU coach Les Miles has suspended quarterback Anthony Jennings and three other players indefinitely following their arrests.

LSU police have booked Jennings, defensive back Dwayne Thomas and defensive tackle Maquedius Bain with unauthorized entry of a residence.

Defensive lineman Trey Lealaimatafao has been booked by Baton Rouge Police with simple battery and attempted simple robbery. Police say Lealaimatafao dug through the pockets of a man knocked unconscious outside a bar and punched the man’s girlfriend.

Miles says he’s working with campus housing and police to determine “what exactly took place” with Jennings, Thomas and Bain, and that the players are cooperating.

LSU spokesman Michael Bonnette says Jennings had been burglarized, but declined to say if he, Thomas and Bain were trying to retrieve stolen items.
