AAA visited Shepherd of the Valley of Poland on May 19 to provide a Senior Driving Course. This event served as a brief crash course in driving for seniors.

Instructor Lori Cook gave out several pamphlets for the class for take-home materials and ran through a series of lessons and videos to help refresh older drivers and inform them about new laws they might not have known about. She provided a workbook and included interactive techniques throughout the class.

“We answer a lot of questions that deal with things specific to older drivers,” Cook said.

Cook discussed signs not commonly seen and new innovative ways to help decrease the concept of a blind spot.

“It’s not necessarily new information, but it’s information that every senior driver would probably benefit from,” Cook said.

In addition to the rules of the road Cook informed her class that if they were interested certain features could be obtained for their cars to help them drive.

“AAA in conjunction with The University of Florida has come out with features on vehicles that meet an older drivers needs,” Cook said. “It’s not necessarily getting a new car, but new features.”

Student Don Wynn said he was enjoying the atmosphere and the education provided.

“I don’t know how much I’m going to remember,” Wynn said. “I’m enjoying it, every bit of it so far. It’s a wonderful class, I would recommend everyone up here at the Shepherd of the Valley that they should at least come down and listen to her.”
