BOARDMAN

Several projects in the township are moving along, with plans for two restaurants to open this summer.

A new McDonald’s location will open Thursday on U.S. Route 224, adjacent to the nearly 40-year-old location it will replace at 1110 Boardman-Poland Road.

The new location, construction for which began in April, will feature upgrades such as the addition of a double drive-through.

Also expected to open this summer is a Primanti Bros. at 6731 South Ave. A company spokesperson provided The Vindicator with an updated time line for the project, saying the company plans to open the new location during the first week of September.

“Everything is on schedule,” said Amy Smith, marketing director for Primanti Bros.

The Pittsburgh-based restaurant, known for its coleslaw- and french-fry-topped sandwiches, is adding a new facility at the site of the former Hollywood Video, which was demolished earlier this year.

Primanti Bros. operates about two dozen restaurants, mostly in the greater Pittsburgh area.

Down the street from the restaurant will be a new Dollar Tree location, which is under construction. That site is on South Avenue near the Chelsea Court apartments. The township zoning department issued a permit for that project, the land for which previously was vacant, March 27, Zoning Inspector Sarah Gartland said.

Taking the place of the former Long John Silver’s on 224 near South Avenue will be an Ohio Auto Loan Services Inc. The leaders of that project have submitted a design for site renovations, but do not yet have a building permit, Gartland said.

The Chick-fil-A location on 224 also is set for a change. The restaurant soon will move across the street from its current location to the current McDonald’s space.

“As soon as they can get going, they want to get going,” Gartland said. “They’re getting close.”

The current McDonald’s building will be torn down once the fast-food restaurant moves to its new location, and Chick-fil-A will take over the space. The plan is to enlarge the lot and to construct a new restaurant with features such as a double drive-through.

“Their landscaping is above and beyond our requirements, so they’re doing really good with that,” Gartland said.

The demolition of the McDonald’s building could start as early as next week.

The plan with McDonald’s and Chick-fil-A dates back to July 2013, when the businesses approached the zoning department.

Near that site, a Marshalls store is scheduled to open in the fall in Tiffany Square at 1134 Boardman-Poland Road.

Marshalls, owned by TJX Companies, is an off-price department store with more than 900 locations.

Area residents also can look for some new additions to vacancies in that plaza.

“We are working on two other national-chain tenants,” said Bill Kutlick of Kutlick Realty LLC. “One [space] is 28,000 square feet, and one is 10,000 square feet.”

Another project that is progressing is the construction of a new Cortland Banks location at Tippecanoe Road and 224, Kutlick said.

“We really enjoy working on the site plans with the developers, and we’re really pleased with all of the projects that are coming along,” Gartland said.
