Hagan resigns

Hagan resigns

COLUMBUS

Six months into his first term as a state board of education member, Robert F. Hagan submitted his resignation, effective July 1.

The former longtime state legislator didn’t explain why he was leaving in his resignation letter and did not return numerous calls Thursday from The Vindicator seeking comment on his departure. The Columbus Dispatch reported Hagan is leaving the board to take an out-of-state job, but didn’t have details.

Gov. John Kasich, a Republican, will appoint a resident of the 13-county district Hagan represents with an election in November to fill the remainder of Hagan’s four-year term.

Hagan, a Youngstown Democrat, couldn’t run last year for his Ohio House seat because of term limits. His wife, Michele Lepore-Hagan, succeeded him.

Activists at court

CAMPBELL

Animal-rights activists will be at Campbell Municipal Court next Friday and at Mahoning County Court in Boardman on June 30 to draw attention to people facing animal-cruelty charges.

In the first case, Tameka Smith of Campbell is accused by police of leaving a dog tied to its house in the rear yard of her home in January. The dog froze to death with no food or water, police say.

In the other case, Dustin and Debbie Dellick of Boardman are accused of neglecting a dog last month.

Local animal-rights activists have stood in front of courts in Mahoning County in recent weeks to draw attention to people who face animal-cruelty charges.
