The Boardman library offered Frosted, a new adult cupcake decorating program on May 12. Provided during the class were already baked cupcakes, ready for decorating upon the students’ arrival. Pink icing was available along with a plethora of frosting designs taught by librarians Marnie Alvarez and Nicole DeNiro.

Anna Luongo, daughter of one of the librarians, just returned from Indiana University of Pennsylvania in time to take this class. Luongo is home for the summer and excited to practice some of her skills acquired at the culinary arts school.

“I like decorating, I just don’t like baking,” Luongo said.

Luongo’s mother signed her and a friend up for the class for a day of fun. This new event turned out to be more popular than expected – there was a waiting list after the class had met its maximum number of people - 15.

“Word is definitely spreading,” Alvarez said. “We are having so many people come to main [the main library] I am being asked to do more and more events like this.”

Alvarez said she is excited to push forward, expanding the adult programs at all of the libraries. A few other classes she has taught recently included wine bottle crafts, duct tape wallets and coffee filter wreathes.

“I enjoy this job too much,” Alvarez said. “We become teachers. It’s kind of fun because it is really rewarding. I can’t believe how many people come out happy.”

Alvarez said her favorite part of teaching programs like this is showing people a certain craft or skill in a certain way and seeing them invent their own ways that may even be better.
