C.H. Campbell Elementary School fourth-graders, under the direction of music teacher Michael Fay, presented Destination: America! An Evening of Art and Music by John Jacobson and Roger Emerson May 19. Friends and family members gathered at the Canfield High School auditorium to enjoy music from around America, including rock and roll, country, Broadway and Motown.
Fay welcomed the large audience to the show.
“Good evening. Welcome to our performance of Destination: America! The students are eagerly looking forward to performing for you this evening. We know you all have busy schedules and we really appreciate you being here. It will definitely be worth your while. We have many people to thank for making this evening possible, but I would really like to highlight the parents who helped with the set decorations. They are really amazing. I am blessed to be a part of such a great community which supports our children,” Fay said.
The students began their program with “Destination: America!” and then moved onto “Hitsville, U.S.A.” The next song the students performed was “(That’s Why) They Call it Country,” with students line dancing.
The fourth number the students performed was “Go, Go, Go Guitars” with glam rock dancers. “All Aboard for Broadway” was next in the program.
The students then performed “It’s American as Rock N Roll.” The students closed their show with Reprise: Destination: America!, during which the students came out into the audience and sang in the aisles.
The students’ featured art work was displayed on the walls of the auditorium and in the cafeteria. C.H Campbell art teacher Diane Leonard organized the art portion of the evening.
Featured artwork included the Ohio artifact, the Mica Hand made of clay and colored pencil; then-and-now pencil drawings of students’ self-portraits; a mixed media visual perspective titled A Tree in Perspective; a tempera painting titled The Cardinal, which was a study in color theory; printmaking of Aztec Designs as a study in patterning;
The Ohio Trivia Train, a study in found objects and assembly structure; and coil pottery made of clay, which focused on Ohio’s pottery industry.
“I would like to thank these children. They are amazing and they make my life wonderful every day,” Fay said.
