Valley executive banker dies at 83

A former bank executive who served the Mahoning Valley died this week. Born in Columbus in March 1932, Alan G. Brant, 83, died at Lake Vista of Cortland on Monday.

Brant served as president and chief executive officer of Second National Bank in Warren from 1985 until his retirement in 1999. Under his leadership, Second National Bank expanded from eight offices to a successful financial services company with 36 offices in nine counties and assets in excess of $1.54 billion.

Brant graduated from Warren G. Harding High School and received a bachelor’s degree from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio.

He received an executive award from the Graduate School of Credit and Financial Management at Dartmouth College in Hanover, N.H., and was a graduate of the Commercial Bank Management Arden House at Columbia University in New York, N.Y.; and the Advanced Management Program at Case Western Reserve University of Cleveland.

His professional career in banking and finance began in 1954 – the same year he married his wife, Nancy Hennis Brant of McKeesport, Pa.

He was the senior vice president and manager of the Central National Bank Retail Branch System in Cleveland, where he oversaw 600 employees throughout 55 branches. Nine years later, he became chairman, president and CEO of Centran Bank of Akron.

He went on to become the president and CEO of Second National Bank in Warren. He maintained that position until his retirement in 1999.

Brant leaves behind daughters Cynthia Fitzgerald of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Carol Quigley of Libertyville, Ill.; five grandchildren; two nephews; and two grandnephews.
