No charges for Ohio mother in child’s gun death

CINCINNATI (AP) — A grand jury in southwest Ohio has declined to indict a mother whose 3-year-old son accidentally killed himself with her gun.

The Butler County prosecutor said today that jurors heard evidence in the case before deciding not to charge the woman in Hamilton, north of Cincinnati.

Elizabeth Green’s 3-year-old son Marques Green died at a hospital June 11 shortly after the shooting. She told an emergency dispatcher amid screams that he apparently took her handgun out of her purse.

Prosecutor Mike Gmoser said he thought it was important for a grand jury to consider the case because of “a groundswell of attention” to children and guns.

The death came in the aftermath of a 14-year-old Hamilton boy’s fatal shooting. A 16-year-old boy was charged with reckless homicide.
