Swarming mayflies, crashes close bridge for 2nd night

WRIGHTSVILLE, Pa. (AP) — Authorities say a central Pennsylvania bridge was closed for the second night in a row because of swarms of mayflies thick enough to cause accidents.

Wrightsville fire officials said the Route 462 bridge over the Susquehanna River between Columbia and Wrightsville was closed at about 10 p.m. Sunday.

Chief Chad Livelsberger said a vehicle slowing because of the cloud of insects led to the crash, although he didn’t believe anyone was seriously hurt.

The bridge was also shut down Saturday night after three motorcycle crashes also attributed to the flies.

Livelsberger said the department was dispatched to deal with one crash, and while units were there they saw two more motorcycle crashes. All three victims were treated at the scene.
