Despite shooting, cemetery is gem

I am writing in reference to the funeral shooting that occurred June 6 at Tod Homestead Cemetery in Youngstown. This was unfortunately an isolated incident that by no means reflects negativity on that family or the many wonderful families located in this area.

On that afternoon, it was becoming obvious that tension was increasing amongst the family, but the cemetery attendants were very polite and efficient in getting the families’ loved one buried. The Youngstown Police Department responded in moments for our protection and to restore order.

The grounds crew, under the supervision of Kenneth Sommers, is always very sensitive and professional. Sallie Tod Dutton and the cemetery board of directors have given much time, energy and financing to maintain and beautify the property that was left to establish “a cemetery for the people of Youngstown.”

It has historical significance to our city because it was a part of the acreage willed by George Tod, the son of Ohio’s Civil War governor, David Tod.

The citizens of this Valley can be pleased that we have Tod Homestead Cemetery that is not only historical, but maintained to provide a peaceful and beautiful place to honor the memory of loved ones. Lynn R. Phillips, Youngstown
