The Youngstown Embroider’s Guild of America, EGA, hosted Basic Stitching at the Poland library on May 13. This free program, open to the community, was part of a community outreach program provided by the EGA.

Ruth Ebert, a member of the EGA and the woman in charge of the day’s event, said they try to extend this outreach program to adults and children. The EGA has done three events with adults and has plans to go into the schools in the fall for the children.

Jean Chamberlain, one of the members of The Embroider’s Guild, was helping participants of the event work on pin cushions.

Designs were set up on each table, giving people the option of making a tulip, a butterfly or a daisy.

Chamberlain said her favorite part of helping with events like these is the fun of teaching people to learn something different.

Sue Robinson, another member of the Guild, said this was a great way to meet people when she moved to the area 35 years ago. Robinson came from the Columbus area with her husband who got transferred to the area and a friend brought her to an event like this.

She said she really enjoys the people aspect of events like these and being apart of the EGA.

“No matter how little, you can learn something from someone else,” Robinson said. “Learning from each other — that’s what it‘s all about.”

The Embroiderer’s Guild meets at the IOOF Hall in Canfield on the fourth Tuesday of every month.
