CAMPBELL

Campbell police’s fitness center got a recent facelift to keep officers in shape.

Muscle Connection of Poland and the North Star Paint Co. in Campbell donated more than $35,000 toward renovations and new equipment. The facility now features two treadmills, a cushioned-style floor, punching bags, weights and workout machines.

“We have a commitment to fitness,” Campbell Police Chief Drew Rauzan said.

The city allowed the department to use former office space at city hall, 351 Tenney Ave., in June 2013, which initially had older equipment.

John Straub, president of Muscle Connection, said he started the company at his dad’s house in Campbell and still has connections with the community.

“They need that support,” Straub said. “[I think] when you have someone that’s physically strong, you can have a strong police force, and I think that’s what’s needed.”

Rauzan said officers that “have a shot at promotion” have to take a fitness test. The department also offers a $1,000 stipend each year as an incentive.

The chief said about 85 percent of the department’s 14 full-time staff officers have taken and passed the annual test.

The facility will be open to all city-hall employees, Rauzan added.

Donors to the gym’s renovation will be honored during a council meeting at city hall at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.
