Police: Woman reports drug deal rip-off, ends up charged
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla.
Authorities say a South Florida woman who called 911 to report that she was getting stiffed in a drug deal ended up reporting on herself: She now faces charges including drug possession.
The Broward Sheriff’s Office reports that 19-year-old Daneshia Heller told a 911 operator Tuesday that she went to a Fort Lauderdale home to buy marijuana, but a man there took her $5 without giving her the drugs.
Officials say a deputy checked a white substance in Heller’s pocket, which tested positive for alpha-PVP, a psychosis-inducing street drug known as flakka.
The South Florida Sun Sentinel reports that Heller was charged with drug possession and misusing the 911 system. Jail records show Heller was in custody without bond for violating the terms of her release on an unrelated misdemeanor battery charge. Jail records didn’t list an attorney who could be contacted to comment on her case.
2 girls told to close lemonade stand for lack of permit
OVERTON, Texas
Two Texas girls whose lemonade stand was shut down because they lacked a permit instead will offer the drink for free.
Television station KLTV reports that 8-year-old Andria Green and her 7-year-old sister, Zoey, will take only donations for lemonade Saturday in Overton, about 120 miles east of Dallas.
A police officer Monday approached the stand, which offered lemonade for 50 cents and “kettle korn” for $1.
In patrol-car video, the officer can be heard asking the girls’ mother, Sandi Evans, for a permit. She says she wasn’t aware they needed one.
A family friend went to city hall to get one. Authorities waived the $150 fee but said health department officials needed to inspect the stand.
Overton’s police chief says police must follow state health guidelines.
‘Giggles the Pig’ write-in effort ends in Flint mayor’s race
FLINT, Mich.
A lawyer who wanted to enter his pet pig into the Flint mayoral race is calling off the effort.
Michael Ewing started the “Giggles the Pig for Flint Mayor” campaign after learning that a mix-up by Flint’s clerk threatened to keep candidates’ names off the ballot. Gov. Rick Snyder on signed a law last Friday allowing Flint’s mayoral election to proceed despite the error.
Ewing confirmed to The Associated Press in an email Wednesday that with the write-in effort off, a “Giggles the Pig for Flint Mayor” Facebook page now will be used in part to share good-news stories about Flint.
Ewing had said Giggles’ candidacy sought to draw more attention to the mayoral race, better educate voters about their choices and encourage residents to demand more of elected officials.
