Newcomers win the 25th annual Memorial Mile

It was great running weather for the twenty-fifth annual Memorial Mile, presented by Walgreens, on Memorial Day just before the 111th Kiwanis parade in Boardman.

A large number of runners - 239 - turned out for the event this year than in the past few years. This year, the race was selected to be the Regional Championship for the Road Runners Club of America.

Two newcomers to the event, Joe Guerra and recent University of Mount Union runner Hayley Buzulencia took the top male and female spots. Alan Burns from Boardman, running for Y.S.U., and Raquel Markulin were the next two. Bob Floor of Minerva, Ohio and long time local runner Wilma DePiore were the first two masters. Grandmasters couple Karen and Tom Grantonic swept that division. Butch Caimano and Terry Yarian were the first in the 60-year-old age group.

The race was sponsored by the DeBartolo Corporation, Novak and Davis Insurance, Grange Insurance, Armstrong Cable, Home Savings and Loan, Udder Cream, McDonalds, CTW Development, Brian Laraway of Bury Financial and N.E.O. Urology.
