Make it for Mom was hosted at the Boardman library on May 7. The program was open to children from kindergarten through the sixth grade.
Librarian Allison Graf led the class and provided materials for glitter vases – vases filled with a glue and water mixture and glitter. After the vases were done being crafted those participating made flowers out of tissue paper to put into their vases. Graf said they generally try to pick a theme for events like these, but don’t always have one; however this event was close enough to Mother’s Day to have one.
“We try to do at least one crafty thing per month for the school age crowd,” Graf said. “Sometimes we feel like we miss out on that older age range.”
Graf said the library has various weekly programs for younger children – preschool-aged and below – but are lacking in programs as the children get older.
”It’s kind of tough because that’s a big age range,” Graf said.
For this program Graf targeted that specific age range, but was open to participants a little older or a little younger as well.
A group of girl scouts came to take part in this craft, many excited to bring home their creations to their mothers for the upcoming holiday.
Each child got to pick their own specific glitter and made their own colored bouquets for the vases.
“My favorite part is seeing the kids be proud of the work they did,” Graf said.
