June quilt group meeting to be June 16

That Quilt Group I Belong To will host its June meeting on June 16 at Fair Park in Canfield. Doors will open at 6 p.m. and a potluck dinner will follow at 6:30 p.m. All members are asked to bring a covered dish for the buffet. New officers will be installed. The guest speaker will be Lynn Zocolo, a horticulture educator from Mill Creek Park’s Fellows Riverside Gardens. That Quilt Group I Belong to is open to all quilters in the Mahoning Valley, including all skill levels. Students named to Ashland University’s Dean’s List

To be eligible for this honor, a student must be enrolled full time at Ashland University and achieve at least a 3.5 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Kaitlyn McCreary, from Boardman, achieved this distinction.

Inaugural golf outing hosted by Applewood swim and tennis club

Applewood Swim and Tennis Club will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary. To commemorate this, Applewood Swim and Tennis Club will be hosting its first Inaugural Golf Outing. Boardman Park hosts free concerts

It’s time to pack up your blankets and lawn chairs and head out to Boardman Park’s Maag Outdoor Theatre for some local entertainment at Music in the Park. Bites and Bits of History lunch program

The Mahoning Valley Historical Society’s next Bites and Bits of History lunch program will be on June 18 at noon. Lea Mollman, MVHS Museum Curator will discuss Greystone (now The Arms Family Museum) and how it has changed.

Attendees will see Olive Arms’ original drawings, several sets of early photographs, along with photos from 1960 and current images.

Learn how Greystone has changed over the years. These items are rarely seen by the common visitor and offer a unique virtual tour of the Arts and Crafts home.

Crandall Park South Neighborhood Association announces summer tour

The Crandall Park South Neighborhood Association (CPSNA) will host an Architecture and Garden Tour on July 18 from 10 a.m. unti 4 p.m. on Youngstown’s historic north side.

This group will use funds from the event for additional projects to enhance its north side neighborhoods. Featured sites will be walking tours of Stambaugh Auditorium, Fellows Riverside Gardens, Wick Pollock House and Jones Hall on the YSU campus.

Additionally, seven city residents will open their private gardens for self-guided tours. CPSNA will host a welcome center at the Tod Avenue stone pavilion throughout the day offering light refreshments, gardening information and raffle items.

Wrist bands are required and can be purchases for $15 each beginning at 9:30 a.m. and July 18 at Stambaugh Auditorium ticket office located off the Ford Avenue entrance.

Pirone to speak at meeting

Joseph Pirone of Niles will speak to the June meeting of the World War II Heritage Society on June 15. The meeting takes place monthly on the third Monday at AlaCarte Catering on Lisbon Street in Canfield (State Route 62). A buffet dinner at 6:30 p.m. will precede his talk, at the cost of $14. Monday Night Writers to meet

The next meeting of Monday Night Writers will be June 15 from 6-8 p.m. at Peaberry’s Caf , located at 4350 Boardman-Canfield Road in Canfield. Area writers, both published and unpublished, are invited to attend. Led by professional writer Nancy Christie, author of “Traveling Left of Center and Other Stories,” the two-hour sessions include a mix of writing exercises, information on the creative and business aspects of writing, and group feedback on ‘works-in-progress.’ The fee is $10 per class and registration is preferred. Sensory story time

Join the Boardman library for a family story time for children of all ages with a sensory focus on June 27 at 2 p.m. This program is designed for children with different needs, including those with Autism, speech/language delays, cognitive impairments, AD/HD and other special needs and challenges. Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs at the Boardman library on June 13 from 2-3 p.m. and on June 25 at 6 p.m. Legos will be provided. This event is for children, ages 6 and up.

Crafting is my super power

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a super craft made by “super children” of all ages at the Boardman library during normal library hours in the month of June.

Bonding with babies and books

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months on June 13, 19 and 27 at 10 a.m. at the Boardman library. There will be twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Columbus Children’s Theater presents “Sleeping Beauty”

The Columbus Children’s Theater will present “Sleeping Beauty” at the Boardman library on June 24 at 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. All ages are welcome. Children under 7 must be accompanied by an adult.

Slavic scholarship for YSU students

The Simply Slavic committee has announced that is seeking applicants for its academic scholarship and they are looking no further than Youngstown State University. Undergraduate YSU students who have completed their freshman year and are currently enrolled at YSU are encouraged to apply for the $500 scholarship. All applicants will be required to submit a 500-word essay on how being Slavic affects their lives. Applicants need to be able to substantiate that they are of at least 25 percent Slavic heritage (This requirement is waived for members of YSU’s Slavic Student Association). Funds can be used for scholarships, as well as applied to study abroad programs.

Kayak tours

There will be kayak tours beginning at the East Newport boat launch on June 13 from 10 a.m. until noon or 1-3 p.m., June 26 from 8:30-10:30 a.m. (not for first time kayakers, must be 18-years-old) and June 27 from 10 a.m. until noon. Age and experience restrictions apply. Register and pay two days days prior to the event at Ford Nature Center. The cost is $12 R; 15 NR. The second person in tandem is half the price. Additional fees apply after the deadline.

Spring cleaning kayak

Thursdays family farm tours

Tour includes playroom time, a stop in the barns and a tractor-wagon ride at MetorParks Farm on June 18 and 25 from 10-11:30 a.m.

Weekend farm tours

Enjoy a guided tractor-wagon tour of the farm leaving approximately every half hour on June 14 from 1-4 p.m. Barns are open to visit with the animals. Donations will be accepted and there is a craft fee of $1.

Birding by trolley

Travel through Mill Creek MetroParks by trolley to find the best sports for birding. MetroMutts: sunset farm hike

Hike all four beautiful habitats of the Mindy Henning Memorial Trail at MetroParks Farm-Bikeway Trailhead and watch the summer sunset on the farm with your furry friend. Local shelters will be on hand with adoptable dogs. This is a moderate 2.5 mile hike on June 19 from 6:30-8 p.m.

Contra dance at the Covered Bridge

Couple scotch

Join Mill Creek Golf Course for June’s couple scotch event on June 13 with a 6 p.m. shotgun start. Teams are composed of three couples playing scotch format. No golf handgrips needed. The cost is $45 per couple.

Family range night

There will be free golf instruction at the Mill Creek Gold Course practice range on June 20 at 6:30 p.m. There will be games, prizes and a cook-out on the range.

Chuck E. Cheese story time and library fundraiser

There will be a special story time at 10 a.m., before the store opens, at the Chuck E. Cheese in Boardman on June 24. This story time will take place on the fourth Wednesday of every month in 2015. Support your Mahoning County Public Libraries that day by showing your library card and receive 10 free tokens to play games. The library will receive 15 percent of the purchases made that day at Chuck E. Cheese. Support the Friends of PLYMC by donating your gently used and one read children’s books also that day to support children’s programming. Alter ego party

Teens entering grades 7-12 can go to the Boardman library’s teen party as themselves, but then discover their inner superhero or villain with the help of the library’s DIY costume makerspace. There will also be a series of challenges designed to reveal your alter ego, and you’ll leave with a picture of your new self as a manga character. There will also be food. This event is for teens in grades 7-12 on June 17 at 6:30 p.m.

Third annual creative writing camp

Children entering grades 5-8 can join the Boardman library for the Creative Writing Camp from 10 a.m. until 12 p.m. on June 22-26. Each two-hour session will be filled with writing prompts, writing games, group activities and lots of quiet time for writing. On Friday, parents are encouraged to attend a gala with each child reading an excerpt of their work. Registration is limited to the first 25 children. Simply Slavic looks for volunteers

The fifth annual Simply Slavic fesitival will take place on June 20 from 12-11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East. Ursuline Center hosts sumemr series of spirituality programs

The Ursuline Center is offering a Summer Spirituality Series of programs, beginning with classes on world religion taught by Sister Nancy Dawson. Dawson, executive director of The Ursuline Center and an instructor of World Religions classes at Youngstown State University, will teach three classes on world religions. Her classes are offered on June 15 from either 10:30 a.m until 12 p.m. or 6:30-8 p.m. The first two classes will cover Judaism and Islam. The subject of the third class will be determined based on participants’ interest and the information presented in the first two sessions. Chaney class of 1965 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1965 50th annual reunion will take place at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman on July 31. The cost, which includes dinner, is $40 per person. The class will also host a picnic on Aug. 1 at Slippery Rock Pavillion in Millcreek Park. The cost for the picnic is $10 per person. Semi-Sweethearts dance camp

Join the Boardman band for Spartan Sweethearts, a three-day dance camp filled with dance and music where girls in kindergarten through third grade can learn dance routines taught by the Spartan Sweethearts to the sounds of the Boardman Spartan Marching band, on June 29, 30 and July 1 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. at the Boardman High School main hallway Those who participate in this camp may even have the opportunity to perform with the band. DSAV sponsers bicycle camp for individuals with disabilities

The Down Syndrome Association of the Valley is now accepting applications for a bicycle camp for persons with disabilities June 15-19 at Boardman Glenwood Middle School. This five-day camp is requiring riders to attend one 75-minute session per day, The cost is $75. To be eligible, riders must be at least 8-years-old, have a disability and be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. Riders must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Riders must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds. Log onto DSAV.org for an application to the iCan Bike program. Space is limited and registration deadline is May 30.

Safe Sitter classes set for this summer

Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to be ideal babysitters. The two-day course covers basic first aid, rescue breathing, accident prevention, childcare tips, what to do if a child chokes and how and when to call for help. Cost for the program is $28.50 and scholarships are available for those who meet financial eligibility requirements. Classes are from 9:30 a.m. until 4 p.m. both days and will take place June 24 and 25 and July 22 and 23 at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, and July 8 and 9 and Aug. 5 and 6 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Neighborhood Ministries is sseeking churches to provide free meals

Neighborhood Ministries, a sponsor for the Summer Food Service Program, is seeking churches or organizations to join in providing free meals to children ages 18 and under who live in the Youngstown area. The meals are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Ohio Department of Education from June 8 – Aug. 21. The deadline for submitting a site request is April 30.

Saint Nicholas Church festival set for June

Saint Nicholas Church is having their 42nd annual festival June 17-21 at 764 Fifth Street, Struthers. Admission price is $2 and children 12 and under are free. The festival begins at 6 p.m.

Pink Ribbon Golf Classic set for July 13

The annual Pink Ribbon Golf Classic will take place at Youngstown Country Club on July 13. All proceeds from this event will go directly to the American Cancer Society. The 18 hole scramble will be followed by lunch and a Chinese auction and raffle.

Simply Slavic call for vendors

The fifth annual Simply Slavic festival will be on June 20 from 12-11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East. Organizers are seeking authentically Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents. Simply Slavic has vending space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors who will provide a variety of Slavic merchandise and foods for patrons during the festival. The confirmation deadline for previous vendors is April 15. Applications from new vendors will be accepted after this date, but questions are welcome at any time. Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Both meetings will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1 1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. The Ursuline Center announces 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk Schedule

The Ursuline Center, located at 4280 Shields Road, has announced its 2015 Guided Labyrinth Walk schedule. All persons of faith are invited to participate in these free events. Walks generally take 20-30 minutes. This year’s first guided walk is April 19 at 2 p.m. and offers an additional feature. The event starts with a presentation on the “Spirituality of Labyrinths” in The Ursuline Center, then moves outdoors for a walk celebrating the Earth. Therest of the walks is as follows: June 9 at 6:30 p.m. - Celebrating Fatherhood; July 14 at 6:30 p.m. - Celebrating Families; Aug. 11 at 6:30 p.m. - Welcoming the Stranger; Sept. 8 at 6:30 p.m. - Celebrating Peace; and Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. - Celebrating the Feast of St. Francis, Showing Solidarity with the Poor.

Friends Specialty at the Garden Caf opens at Fellows Riverside Gardens

Friends Specialty at the Garden Caf in Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens has officially opened for business. The Garden Caf has been refreshed and newly updated and will offer an eclectic selection of teas, locally roasted coffee, a locally sourced lunch menu, desserts and other libations all served with a complimentary view of stunning Lake Glacier. The Caf is open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday during the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for pastries, coffee and tea.
