UPDATE | Storm knocks out power in areas of Canfield, Poland and Boardman

Ohio Edison reported many power outages in the Poland, Canfield and Boardman areas caused by the early evening fast-moving storm.

As of 7 p.m, Ohio Edison First Energy’s outage map showed the worst power outage at Dobbins and Clingan roads near Poland Seminary High School and the Poland Township Police Department with more than 1,500 customers without power.

The outages listed all said power was expected to be restored by 3 a.m. Friday. Also in Poland, there were between 101 and 500 customers without power on Fifth Street, near Knollwood Lane.

Poland Swim Club on Clingan Road had five to seven trees down, damage to the pool, and damage done to the fencing and possibly tennis courts. One club employee, who has been there 17 years, said it was the worst damage he has ever seen.

Poland Township Police Chief Brian Goodin said there were no reported injuries, just "all property damage” about 7:30 p.m. Thursday.

He said there were several trees down across roadways and some took power lines with them. He said there were trees down on Highland Avenue, off state Route 170, as well as on Clyde Street and another tree was on U.S. Route 224 near Holy Family.

There were parts of Canfield with between 101 and 500 customers without power on South Turner Road and at state Route 46 and Herbert Road. Another section of Herbert Road, between Route 46 and South Turner had an outage of between 21 and 100 customers, according to Ohio Edison First Energy’s outage map.

Shields Road and Lockwood Boulevard in Boardman also had between 101 and 500 customers without power. There were also multiple outages at Brookwood Road and Shields.

The storm also dropped several trees, and hail was reported in Boardman and Canfield.

Cardinal Joint Fire District Chief Don Hutchison said he didn’t believe it was a tornado in Canfield early tonight.

“It looks like straight line wind as it stands right now,” he said. Hutchison further said it looked like every few trees was damaged by today’s storms and there was quarter-size hail.

He said the damage was concentrated on state Route 46 on the north side of Canfield City and into Canfield Township, specifically on Shields and Gibson roads as well as Blueberry Hill and Herbert Road.

An EF-1 tornado damaged a few homes and took down trees in Canfield City, Canfield Township and Ellsworth Township July 8, 2014. Canfield City Manager Joe Warino noted that Thursday’s storms took a similar path as that storm, but was driving out of town on business.

He said while driving through the Canton area he saw a bad storm headed for the Valley.
