NAPLES, FLA.

Fred Koenig, a former Mahoning Valley cardio-thoracic surgeon who was arrested June 4 on charges of possession of child pornography, was found dead of a self-inflicted knife wound Tuesday evening at his Isla Ciudad Court home in Naples.

Koenig, 69, was a former cardiac surgeon with Youngstown Heart Surgeons, according to The News-Press Media Group.

Members of the Collier County Sheriff’s Office were called to Koenig’s Village Walk development home after a bail bondsman with whom he had posted a $125,000 bond on the June 4 charges reported the retired surgeon missing and had failed to show for a meeting with his attorney.

Deputies found Koenig on his bed in the unlocked home with a self-inflicted knife wound to the chest, a note on a nightstand next to the bed and a knife under his left hand.

Koenig had been arrested after a clerk at the Naples Costco reported he had ordered a set of six prints through a photo kiosk using a memory stick.

The clerk noted during the printing process some of the photos were objectionable according to Costco policy and notified the sheriff’s office.

A deputy found Koenig walking to his vehicle in the Costco parking lot and arrested him for obscene material-possession of photos of sexual performance of a child.

A June 29 court date had been set and he was released on bond Saturday.
