Road closings

LEETONIA

The village will be blocking off streets starting at 6 a.m. Friday to accommodate its Bigfoot Festival. The streets will reopen at about midnight Saturday, or when the festival is over and the cleanup is complete.

The closed streets are Main Street from Elm Street to the alley by the Fraternal Order of Eagles, 248 Main St., as well as Walnut Street from High to Front streets. Festival guests and others are asked to not enter or park in these areas.

Porch fire

YOUNGSTOWN

An electrical outlet on the porch of a 433 Knox St. home stated a fire that caused $5,000 in damage Monday.

Crews were called to the home at about 3:45 p.m. Reports said the homeowner put out part of the fire with a garden hose.

The cause is under investigation, but reports said it appeared to be an electrical problem. There were no injuries.

Poland school board

POLAND

Poland school board will meet at 7:30 p.m. today at the board office, 3339 Dobbins Road, for an executive session to discuss employment of personnel.

Vacant house fire

YOUNGSTOWN

Fire reports said a blaze at a vacant 607 Woodland Ave. house at about 8:50 a.m. Monday was intentionally set.

A passer-by called 911 and crews found light smoke when they arrived. Reports said the fire appeared to have started at a back door and spread to the first floor. Damage is listed at $4,000. There were no injuries.

Bryant convicted

WARREN

Gayshawn Bryant, 18, of High Street Northeast in Howland, was convicted Tuesday in Trumbull County Common Pleas Court of aggravated robbery with a gun Dec. 30 at a house on Clifton Drive in Howland.

Police said Bryant and another male emerged from the woods near a house on Clifton, then “jumped and slammed” a boy, 17, multiple times to the ground in his driveway, police said.

Bryant then held a gun to the youth’s head and asked who was in the house. After they took the youth’s phone, the youth ran away and later identified Bryant because he knew him, police said.

Bryant will be sentenced after the county Adult Probation Department conducts a pre-sentence investigation.

Anesthetist training

WASHINGTON

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, a Cleveland Democrat, announced $16,684 in federal funding for nurse anesthetist training at Youngstown State University. “Nurse anesthetists ensure the proper administration of anesthesia, which is critical to patient care,” Brown said. “This traineeship will give more nurses-in-training the opportunity to take on this specialty and care for Ohioans.” The grant comes from the Department of Health and Human Services through the Nurse Anesthetist Traineeship program. The program aims to increase access to nurse anesthetist care for underserved populations.

Arrest over cigarette

BOARDMAN

A township woman faces a charge of aggravated burglary, a first-degree felony, after a victim reported that the suspect tried to break into his apartment while wielding a knife.

The victim told police that a neighbor in his Hillman Way apartment building, Sakinah Lockhart, 29, threatened him with a knife early Tuesday when he would not let her into his apartment. He said she also tried to shove her way into the apartment, damaging the door.

The incident, the victim and a witness told police, started because Lockhart wanted a cigarette from the victim.

Lockhart was arraigned in Mahoning County Area Court here Tuesday and is scheduled to be back in court Tuesday.

Shot at intersection

WARREN

A city man, 21, was driven to ValleyCare Trumbull Memorial Hospital for treatment of one or more gunshot wounds he suffered at the intersection of Atlantic and Forest streets Northwest at 8:42 p.m. Monday.

Police responded to the shooting location but found nothing except a vehicle leaving the area that matched the description given of one thought to be involved.

Police caught up to the vehicle at Laird Avenue and East Market Street, where the female driver told police she had the victim in the vehicle.

Police questioned the victim and others at the hospital. Police provided no other information, including how serious the man’s injuries were or how the shooting occurred.

Run volunteers needed

The Color Run is coming to Youngstown on Saturday and Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley has been selected as its local charity partner. The race will begin at 8 a.m. at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St. The Color Run’s “Shine Tour 2015” will include new course elements, including a glitter/ sparkle zone, as well as dancing, music and more.

Schoolhouse tours

POLAND

Poland Historical Society will do free tours of the Little Red Schoolhouse at the corner of Center and Struthers roads, on the second Sunday of each month during the summer.

The public is invited to visit the schoolhouse from 1 to 3 p.m. Sunday, as well as July 12 and Aug. 9.

As part of Celebrate Poland, the society also will do walking tours of the village graveyard next to Poland Presbyterian Church at 6 p.m. June 26. A walking tour of Poland Riverside Cemetery will take place at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 27.

The society will have a display tent set up from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. near village hall June 27.
