Youngstown announces Summer Event Series
YOUNGSTOWN
The city’s Summer Event Series lineup features both long-standing area traditions and some new experiences.
“This summer’s going to be really exciting for us,” said Michael McGiffin, city coordinator for downtown events and special projects.
The series kicks off this weekend with two colorful events: Pride Youngstown on Friday and Saturday, and the Color Run on Saturday. Other June events include the Simply Slavic festival June 20 and Slide the City on June 27.
“We’re putting an inflatable slide on the Market Street bridge, something we’ve never experienced,” McGiffin said Tuesday of Slide the City.
July events, he said, aim to fill the gap in people’s social calendars after Fourth of July festivities end. The weekend of July 11 is jam-packed with events, starting with the St. Nicholas Greek Fest, which begins Friday, July 10.
“You’re going to see that weekend branded as the Summer Festival of the Arts weekend,” McGiffin said.
Also going on that weekend are the Youngstown State University Summer Festival of the Arts, as well as jazz and gospel festivals.
Also in July, the city will put on a fireworks display July 4, the Revive Music Festival on July 18 and the Italian Festival starting July 31.
In August, Valley residents have the chance to attend a concert, the Old School Festival, the Pabsolutely event, the Arab American Festival and the Panerathon.
The series wraps up in September with the Rust Belt Music Fest and Silly Science Sunday.
The city also announced Tuesday a partnership with My City Hangouts, a website and mobile application. Users can access information about subscribing businesses in the area, as well as information about the summer event series.
