Animal-rights activists will have a rally outside city hall at 9:45 a.m. Friday before a pretrial hearing for a 22-year-old Youngstown man accused of beating a puppy.
Jawan Johnson of East Princeton Avenue, is charged with cruelty to companion animals, a first-degree misdemeanor, after a Mahoning County deputy dog warden said he found the 8-month-old shepherd mix, named Snappy, bleeding from the mouth and covered in glass May 12. The dog had been hit with a brick, a bowl and a pot, according to a police report.
Johnson’s hearing is before Judge Elizabeth A. Kobly of municipal court at 10:45 a.m. Friday.
Injured in shooting
YOUNGSTOWN
A 31-year-old man was treated at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital after police said he was shot on the East Side just before midnight Tuesday. The victim was shot in the arm and grazed in the chest by gunfire. Reports said the man told police he was shot somewhere on Eliot Lane.
Car fire
YOUNGSTOWN
Fire reports said a 1977 Corvette Stingray in a 365 Camden Ave. home caught fire about 11:30 a.m. Monday. Firefighters arrived and saw smoke, and when they opened the hood, flames shot out, reports said. A cause has not been determined, but reports said there was some sort of equipment failure. Damage was listed at $12,000.
Special meeting
LORDSTOWN
Lordstown Board of Public Affairs has scheduled a special meeting at 4 p.m. today at the administration building, 1455 Salt Springs Road, to enter into contract negotiations in executive session with Clean Energy Future-Lordstown LLC. Another special meeting will follow at the same location at 6 p.m. for the public’s comments or concerns regarding residential trash and recycling collection within the village.
Block Watch
YOUNGSTOWN
The Powerstown Neighbors Block Watch will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at Faith Community Church, 1919 Midlothian Blvd. Councilman John R. Swierz, D-7th, will attend to discuss neighborhood issues.
