“Jurassic World” will be released in theaters Friday, marking the return of the dinosaurs-run-amok blockbuster franchise. Here are a few facts about the movie:
v New cast: This is the first film in the series not to feature Sam Neill, Laura Dern or Jeff Goldblum. This was a creative decision by director Colin Trevorrow: “I know a lot of fans want to see the original characters back. They’re iconic. But I respect those actors too much to shoehorn them into this story for my own sentimental reasons.”
vHonoring actor: There will be a statue of the character John Hammond, the founder of the InGen genetic company and Jurassic Park, as a means to specifically honor Sir Richard Attenborough, who played the role in “Jurassic Park” (1993) and “The Lost World: Jurassic Park” (1997). Attenborough died in 2014.
v Dinosaur maker: It will be the first “Jurassic Park” film to not have animatronic dinosaurs created by Stan Winston, as he did in 2008. Instead, the animatronics were created by effects studio Legacy Effects, a company formed from Winston’s former workshop staff.
v How it started: The story idea for this film was created by Steven Spielberg and Mark Protosevich, who got together privately on several occasions (without studio observance) to confer the notion of doing another installment in the “Jurassic Park” franchise.
v “Jurassic Park” (1993) is one of Chris Pratt’s favorite films. The first time he saw it was on its original opening day at the cinema. Pratt stars in “Jurassic World.”
“The Fosters” (8 p.m., ABC Family): Season 3 begins.
“Becoming Us” (9 p.m., ABC Family): This new documentary series follows a teen whose father is undergoing gender reassignment.
“The Real Housewives of Orange County” (9 p.m., Bravo): Season 10 begins.
“Major Crimes” (9 p.m., TNT): Season 4 of “Major Crimes” opens with a puzzling double-homicide case that is related to an ongoing string of home invasions in the Hollywood Hills. Of, course, Capt. Raydor (Mary McDonnell) and her team are all over it.
“Odd Mom Out” (10 p.m., Bravo): In the new scripted comedy “Odd Mom Out,” author Jill Kargman stars as a fictionalized version of herself. She’s a woman desperately trying to stay grounded while also fitting in with her husband’s ultra-wealthy family.
“Murder in the First” (10 p.m., TNT): A school bus is attacked in the second-season premiere.
