Radio operators to gather June 27 weekend for annual event

Amateur radio operators will gather in three weeks for a free event.

The Mahoning Valley Amateur Radio Operators will demonstrate emergency communications skills to the public from noon June 27 to 2 p.m. June 28 at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.

Amateur radio operators will have several stations at the parks’ facility across from the Canfield Fair fairgrounds using power from batteries, stand alone generators and solar power.

The exercise is called Field Day and is an annual event in the United States and Canada organized by the American Radio Relay League.

The operators will use voice communication as well as Morse Code and digital transmission systems as they set up emergency channels.

There will be a station set up for anyone to come and try to get “on the air,” and all ages are encouraged to attend.
