Border collies Joker and Jill hired to shoo away hordes of geese in NW Ohio

OREGON, Ohio

Fed up with perpetually cleaning up after birds, Maumee Bay State Park officials have hired an unusual security team to help scare away the problem.

The Toledo Blade reports Joker and Jill, both border collies, began working in tandem last month to shoo away the Canada geese and gulls that foul Inland Lake’s beach and water quality with their droppings.

Both are part of Ohio Geese Control, a 10-year-old company that is being used for the first time at the northwest Ohio park.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will pay the company $5,250 to have the dogs patrol at least once a day, seven days a week for the summer.

The cost will be covered by a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency grant and additional funds.
