Poland North Elementary School students attended the Spring Scholastic Bookfair in the school gymnasium on May 12. Scholastic books were found on tables and shelves on the far side of the gym for students to look through and purchase with their parents.

Elvera Cole, Parent-Teacher Organization treasurer, brought her daughter, Angela Cole, to the bookfair.

“Kids like buying books,” Cole said. “The kids are just very excited.”

“What’s really nice about this book fair is that they are having a drawing,” Cole said. “There’s a Samsung tablet and there are those four baskets and if they show up for the bookfair they get to enter one time for that and they are drawing tomorrow.”

Cole said there are no purchases required to enter the drawing and the single entrance provided by the school was just motivation to get more students to attend.

Principal Stephanie Mateja said she was excited for the big turnout, unsure of what it would be because of ongoing baseball games and spring sports in session.

In addition to the bookfair going on, there was also an art show.

“We decided to display the kids’ artwork just to get the parents kind of involved and wanting to come,” Mateja said.

Mateja said this night wouldn’t have been possible without the teachers.

“I give the teachers a lot of credit, they work really hard,” Mateja said. “We don’t have art teachers so they teach art. The teachers are really doing an awesome job teaching art in the classroom. We like to see the walls displayed.”

Also on display was a time capsule, soon to be buried, containing various items from those of Poland North Elementary School.

Members of the PTO and other volunteers helped with both the set-up and take down of the event, as well as serving and providing refreshments.

“There’s just so much going on, but we had a crew set up and it looks awesome,” Mateja said.
