Invest in priceless lifesaver

Columbus Dispatch: Firefighters are well-trained to save lives. But before they are called or can arrive, the first line of defense to keep people safe should be smoke detectors.

They have saved countless lives, including several people who escaped a home fire in Canal Winchester this week.

John J. Marcum and his wife, Linda Marcum, were awakened by smoke detectors early Monday morning in time to save their two young children sleeping in another room. Firefighters said the devices were crucial.

This is a sobering reminder to all to use smoke detectors in their homes. If they already are installed, residents should make sure they are in good working order with fresh batteries.
